Grand Opening of TAC in Toronto, Federation Center, Dec 11, 2014
Initial Directors of TAC with Honor Guests, HE Turkish Ambassador Selcuk Unal and Consul General Ali Riza Guney, at Grand Opening of TAC in Toronto, Federation Center, Dec 11, 2014

Turkic Assembly of Canada (TAC) Grand Opening event took place at FCTA Community Center on December 11, 2014, Thursday, at 6:30pm, with participation of honor guests HE Turkish Ambassador Selcuk Unal, HE Consul General Ali Riza Guney and Vice Consul Gokhan Toy.

In its official registration documents filed as a non-profit organization, TAC mission has been defined with the following statement:

"To carry out the efforts it deems appropriate on important cultural, economic, educational, historical, basic democratic and human rights, social and religious issues, which closely relate to Turks, and to the Turkish/Turkic communities in Canada. In addition, to represent and to make the appropriate representations on behalf of its members and the Turkish community in Canada and elsewhere; to encourage, establish and promote closer relations with Canadians and with members of other ethnic communities in Canada, and in this regard, to represent the Turkish community in the best possible manner; when appropriate, to co-operate with other organizations and associations, within and outside of Canada, which have similar aims."

Please see the grand opening event agenda document below for initial Directors of TAC, and its registered signing officers (Executive Commity - EC), which are:
- Ismail Vataner, term President (Balkan Turks of Europe)
- Fahriddin Khudaykulov, VP (Uzbek Turks of Uzbekistan)
- Fereydoun Mehdipour Varjoui, Treasurer (South Azerbayjani Turks of Iran)
- Oktay Alp Turk, Secretary (South Azerbayjani Turks of Iran)
- Mehmet Bor, Director (Karacay-Malkar Turks of Russia)

After nearly two years of discussions among the member communities, TAC has been established based on the foundation of the following democratic policies and governance principles:

1) In the Assembly, membership is one tiered and based on equal representation of all the known Turkic speaking groups (listed on the TAC letterhead below), regardless of their current population in Canada or the geographical size and  population of the related Turkic people they represent outside of Canada.

2) Group definition is based on a combination of geographical and sectional/tribal differences, represented with voting rights at annual General Assembly (GA) or other important members' decision making meetings. For example, Crimea, Romania and Kazan Tatars all have different representing groups in TAC.

3) Rotationally, each year the ownership of the annual events with term presidency will in turn be delegated to one of the members/groups. Balkan Turks group has the ownership for the current year, and its rep Ismail Vataner is the current term president of TAC until 2015 annual GA when another member group(s) will take over.

4) TAC  Directors will be annually elected by GA freely from self-nominated volunteers of the member communities with no restriction, as per TAC by-laws (minimum 7, maximum 25). Signing officers will be chosen among Directors.

5) Maximum inclusiveness and cultural diversity, utmost tolerance and respect for differences in backgrounds (religious, political, social, cultural, gender, age, economic, geographic, ethnic, etc.), free expression of opinions, support for human rights, are the basic principles of TAC for its members to follow. Stressing on potential divisive issues and bringing forward internal politics among the member communities will be discouraged, and emphasizing of the common interests and to share uniting values/subjects will be encouraged all the time.

6) Every year, TAC EC will organize at least two annual events: annual picnic, and Nawruz/Spring Festival, which has been accepted as a historically unity symbol for TAC members and will be celebrated by the member communities accordingly.

Thanks for all the TAC member community representatives who attended the Grand Opening on December 11, Thursday, especially the members who came from remote regions of GTA despite the adverse whether conditions. Some could arrived very late, and some could not make it. It was also a pleasure to host  our honor guests, Turkish diplomats In Canada, HE Ambassador Selcuk Unal, HE CG Ali Riza Guney and Vise Consul Gokhan Toy. Thanks for their support, and express of solidarity with TAC communities in their hard and long journey, the process of integration to their new home, Canada, successfully.

Lastly, the upcoming important event of TAC will be thetraditional annual Turkic Nawruz/New Year Festival by end of March 2015 (last weekend of March) in GTA area. The festival will be organized by the current term leader Balkan Turks community with the help of all other member communities of TAC, which is open for public, including Turkic/Turkish community members, as well as any other non-Turkic/Turkish communities that celebrate the festival. Stay tuned for the updates re this ancient historic Turkic festival and its invitation.

We wish a prosperous, healthy, happy and successful new year for all the families of TAC member communities.

Thanks and regards.
